Message control and I/O are the same. For all practical purposes, your car will know no difference. 1996 models are OBD2 and there were changes in the internals of the engine which will not allow you to put a pre-'96 ECU in a 1996+ Z. But the 1995's are OBD1 and you can interchange the ECU's. The harness connector is the same, the connections are the same, the sensors are the same (electronically speaking).
